Background: Littering of waste such as paper receipts, cigarette butts, chocolate and biscuit wrappers, bottle caps, and paper towels is a common phenomenon that has been reported in most countries, causing unpleasant landscapes, transmission of microbial agents, leakage of chemical pollutants, and economic consequences. The aim of this study was to assess the quantity, composition, and status of littered waste in some villages of Tuyserkan County, Iran in 2026.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by assessing the condition of eight villages using a visual survey method. The collected data included the number of types of littered waste in a certain area of the studied environments. The obtained data were interpreted using the clean environment index.
Results: The results showed that the density of littered waste in the studied rural environments ranged from 0.124 to 0.846 items/m2. The composition of littered waste in the study areas included cigarette butts (62.2%), paper (8.9%), plastic (9.9%), and other types of littered waste (19.4%). Based on the calculated index, 50% of rural environments were in the severe pollution status, 25% in the critical pollution status, and 12% in the low pollution status. The results showed that none of the studied villages were in a clean status.
Conclusion: The observed unfavorable situation indicated that it is necessary to establish regular cleaning programs and increase educational programs aimed at reducing waste littering behavior.
